A Marketer’s Perspective

Stage I: Strategy

Let’s assume that the entire process begins with a carefully developed strategy that answers key questions. What are you offering, and to whom? Why should someone buy it? How does your brand stand out in the market, and what position does it hold there? What should it be associated with? How should it communicate? Should it exude expertise, establishing itself as an authority in the industry? Or would it be better to adopt a more friendly and casual tone? The answers to these questions, based on target audience research, form the foundation of effective communication with customers.

Phase II: Design

The next stage, which stems directly from the adopted strategy, is design. The brand’s visual identity (including shapes, colors, fonts, and layout) should align with the adopted strategy, help build associations, and ensure that the brand is perceived as the most appropriate choice. Design encompasses both the product (packaging, label) and the entire brand (logo, visual identity). Brand perception research helps ensure that the design resonates with the target audience as intended

Every touchpoint in the brand-customer relationship evokes associations and emotions in the recipient, often unconsciously. Once formed, these associations do not stay with us forever —all it takes is a purchase that doesn’t meet our expectations, a delayed delivery, an incomplete order, or visiting a new website where the shopping process is unintuitive. Even small things can change our perception of a brand and cause us to choose a different brand the next time we shop.

Stage III: Visibility and Associations

The next stage is… showcasing the brand to potential customers (selecting communication tools and channels) and creating associations at various stages of the Customer Journey (brand appearance, scope of communication)—from building awareness to the purchase phase. Brand associations are formed every time people come into contact with the brand. Social media communication, product ads, email campaigns, reviews, customer service, or even the design of the website—all of these factors influence how your brand is perceived.

Stage IV: Consistency

Many marketers underestimate the importance of communication consistency. Every campaign is different—it varies significantly in visual style, uses different language, and applies to entirely different communication contexts. It’s hard to resist the urge to change, especially when the industry tempts you with new inspirations; however, inconsistency makes it harder to build brand awareness and requires more time, money, and human resources. In other words, a lack of consistency makes it harder for people to recognize and remember your brand.

This is a major mistake, and a strategy is invaluable, especially at this stage. It defines recurring elements and shows how to use them. Consistency across all channels and at every stage of the customer journey is a key element in building a strong brand. And most importantly—it doesn’t have to be boring! Just look at the communications of brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, or Nike.

Stage V: Decision

Presenting the brand at the right time and in the right context, highlighting its unique features, and encouraging action at a pivotal moment influences the final decision to choose a product or service. This is the first—but short-term—success. The next step is to build associations and experiences that keep the customer coming back to the brand. The ultimate goal of brand-building efforts is to make the consumer feel that choosing a particular brand is “the right decision.” Customers are willing to pay more for a brand that is more firmly rooted in their minds. So—isn’t it worth it? 😉

How do we buy, and when does a brand become strong? The consumer’s perspective

Stage I: Need

It all starts with a need or a desire to have something. In every consumer’s behavior, there comes a pivotal moment when a need or desire arises, bringing with it a series of associations—places, products, services, and often specific brands.

Stage II: Associations

Try this simple exercise and answer these questions for yourself. You want to buy a bike—what brands come to mind? You’re planning to buy a phone—what are your first associations? Do you start with a need? Or maybe you see a product online, and only then do you feel the urge to shop? Do you choose exactly what you see? Or perhaps when you see Brand X, Brand Y—which you know and like—comes to mind?

Yes, in very simple terms, that’s how the shopping process begins. Right from the start, strong brands stand out—they’re the ones that immediately popped into your mind. They have an advantage—in the best-case scenario, they’re the first (and only) choice, and if not, we at least start our search with them or (often unconsciously) pay special attention to them during the purchasing process.
Cons

Spójność i wyrazistość komunikacji, przemyślana ekspozycja marki, równowaga między działaniami sprzedażowymi i wizerunkowymi to istotna brand buildingu. Each subsequent interaction with the brand and purchase strengthens the bond between the brand and the consumer. As emotions are experienced and specific actions are repeated, neural connections are reinforced, which increases the likelihood of forming a purchasing habit where the consumer becomes loyal to a specific brand.

Key Takeaways:

Building a strong brand is a process. Brand building is a strategic process of planning, shaping, and managing a brand, with the goal of building a positive image, brand recognition, and customer loyalty. It encompasses many activities, such as developing strategies, designing visual identity, maintaining consistent communication, and delivering valuable experiences to customers at every stage of their interaction with the brand.

Immediate associations are valuable assets. Strong brands are those that immediately come to mind when a consumer is considering purchasing a particular product or service. However, building immediate, positive associations requires time, consistency, and coordinated efforts at both the strategic level and in the experiences offered to consumers.

Brand recognition isn’t everything. The goal of brand building is not only to create a recognizable symbol or name, but also to build strong emotional bonds with consumers and earn their trust, which ultimately translates into market success and customer loyalty.
